Lovin' poochfuls help students lick stress of exams

FURRY THERAPISTS: Tiffaney Taverner's reformed poodle Gene R. Simmons, who went from death row to therapy dog, has been helping stressed-out students studying for do-or-die finals at the University of Manitoba. Last week, the award-winning pooch, who usually hangs out at Barks n' Bubbles with spa owner Taverner, hit the Taché gym and University College with four or five teams of canine helpers from the St. James Ambulance therapy dog teams.
Students were invited to come and pet the friendly, loving animals, stay for a visit and de-stress. One student actually curled up with a dog who curled right back up with her, and said, "This feels so much like home and it feels so good." Last week -- at peak exam time -- the dogs provided therapy on two days for two-hour stretches. "Then they get pooped, and we go home!"

Yes, you can teach Gene Simmons new tricks
Tiffaney Taverner, who owns Barks n' Bubbles Pet Spa, is flying to Ottawa on her 40th birthday Nov. 3 to see her idol, Cesar Millan, the Dog Whisperer in concert. "I have tickets in the 12th row!" she says. Millan comes to Winnipeg Nov. 14, but Taverner just can't wait. Her black poodle, Gene Simmons, got his name for his black top knot and habit of yawning and lolling out his big tongue.
He's almost four now and has won 15 ribbons since July, but he was on the fast track to death when Taverner found him. "He was supposed to be euthanized for biting, barking and peeing." Taverner called Sharon Hobbs, a trainer who specializes in dogs on death row, and said, "If we can teach him one thing in six weeks, he has a fighting chance."
Gene, who quickly learned to sit and stay in that time, was on his way to a big new life. Now he's so well-behaved, he's a therapy dog. "Gene's going to give comfort and support at the flu clinics this fall," says Taverner. "You can teach ANY dog new tricks."
